2016 TRIM-TB Annual Research Conference

The TRIM-TB annual research conference was held at the Hyatt Hotel in Dar es Salaam on August 8-9, 2016 with the title: Update on TB Diagnostics. The planning committee included representatives from the National Program on Tuberculosis and Leprosy (NTLP), TRIM-TB faculty from Muhimbili University of Health Sciences (MUHAS) and Fogarty faculty from Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. A total of 50 participants registered on line and represented the NTLP, Ministry of Health, MUHAS NGOs and Social Service Organizations from throughout Tanzania. Participants included researchers, clinicians, program directors, laboratorians, graduate students and research staff.

Day one began with an overview of the current picture of TB and HIV-TB in Tanzania and then turned to an update on new TB diagnostics including interferon gamma release assays (IGRAs),  Xpert and other nucleic acid amplification techniques, investigational breath-based diagnostics, diagnostic tests in children, urine assays for mycobacterial lipoarabinomannan,  microbial load assays and manual nucleic acid amplification tests. Test characteristics were reviewed with an emphasis on differences in HIV-positive and HIV-negative populations.

Day two included interactive sessions on active case finding, practical aspects of Xpert use, the use of radiologic imaging in TB diagnosis, line probe assays for the detection of drug resistance, and diagnosis of MDR-TB. Case presentations were used to illustrate the use of current diagnostics and to allow additional questions from the participants.
